RCMI Network

Network

In 1996, the Research Informatics Unit (now CIAR) started the development of a network to provide connectivity to research labs and facilities. Currently, the RCMI network provides connections to over 200 computers in research-related facilites. These facilities include the Institute on Neurobiology in Old San Juan.

The RCMI Network has a Gigabit backbone, and most computer connections are 100 Mbps (FastEthernet). These internal capabilities, combined with the external OC-3 connection to the University of Puerto Rico Internet2 Gigapop, provide fast connectivity to other Internet2 institutions. The Gigapop is managed by the UPR High-Performance Computing facility of the University of Puerto Rico.

CIAR is performing extensive testing of the RCMI telecommunications infrastructure in order to optimize network traffic. Part of this information is available to users, so our Campus community can better understand the need for appropriate use of the network.
